Understanding Your Child's Difficulty with Tummy or Back Time. Why Some Love and Some Hate it!

Updated: Jul 21, 2024

Dear Mumma,

It takes work to be born. Many factors can contribute to a child's discomfort or challenges with tummy or back time. The birthing process, whether it involves prolonged labour, getting stuck in the birth canal, a C-section, or other interventions, can result in injuries or imprints on the head and spine.

Newborns may exhibit a stiff neck or trunk, a flattened head, or a strong preference for holding their head to one side. These physical characteristics can affect their ability to enjoy tummy and back time and may also impact their ease of breastfeeding on both sides.

Tummy time is crucial for your baby's proprioceptive system, which helps them understand where their body is in space and how it moves. Research shows that active babies tend to develop better perception, memory, coordination, and focus as they grow.

Spending time on their tummy helps your baby develop the muscles in their arms, shoulders, and neck, which are essential for sitting up, crawling, and walking. Babies who do not get enough tummy time may experience slower development of certain motor skills.

Effective tummy time is not only foundational for your baby's motor development but also marks the beginning of their ability to self-regulate and move independently. This proprioceptive input can be very soothing and help your baby learn to moderate their responses to sensory stimulation.

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is a transformative whole-body approach using light touch to foster a safe, grounded connection. It shifts the body from fight-or-flight to relaxation, releasing restrictions and revitalizing the nervous system and organs. This therapy supports trauma release and promotes overall well-being, honouring the body's intelligence to make necessary adjustments for optimal health.

Heartwarming Experiences from Local Parent

In addition to having a tongue tie and an extremely tight neck, my newborn daughter preferred to nurse on one side and moved very little on the other. I'm extremely pleased that Debbie Garbin, our lactation consultant, recommended Sandra. She was completely relaxed for the first two sessions with Sandra, and at the conclusion, her neck loosened up. She cried less, slept more, fed better, and put on weight as she became more content. She looks forward to tummy time now. I was really at ease during my session, and after it was over, I realised that I was more patient with my second child. Harriet Elizabeth Porter
